Window Farming

I was trolling through YouTube the other day and found a wonderful website that talks about a hydroponic growing system for your homes windows! Just think about it, a window with recycled plastic bottles that can grow your herbs and some vegetables! Here is the link to the web-site: http://www.windowfarms.org/

Here is an exerpt from their website: "Windowfarms are suspended, hydroponic, modular, low-energy, high-yield edible food gardens built using low-impact or recycled local materials. This site is the online community of window farmers, where we share our development processes and design innovations. The designs evolve through this online collaboration of individuals.

These vertical gardens, located in windows throughout the cityscape, are intended to inspire others to design and implement their own window farms, creating a network of urban food production. Signs in the windowfarms will challenge people to create their own and direct them to a website where we can all share photos, plans, designs, and information."

Ideas to reduce your footprint today

1. When one of your standard light bulbs go out, replace it with a new CFL light bulb.
2. Commute to work or school with others.
3. wash and re-use your water bottles and other bottles.
4. If your not in a room that requires light, turn the lights off.
5. Wash your cloths in cold water when you can get away with it.
6. Take quicker showers in the mornings.
7. Turn the water off while you are brushing your teeth.
8. Invest in a good Kill-A-Watt unit.
9. Stop buying junk you don't need. (we should all do this!)
10. Re-use misprinted paper for scrap paper.
11. Start a compost heap
12. Use old milk jugs as pots for plants.
13. Have fun with it and think of new ways you can save the Earths resources.

There will be many, many more ideas added to the list over the course of this blog! Add your own to it as well! Viva la green revolution!

Introduction to sustainable living!

Hello everyone!

This is a blog about one of my passions: Sustainable Living. Sustainable living is a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resource and his/her own resources. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_living

This is a passion because I am aware of my own imprint on the environment. I drive a car, I eat mass produced food, I drink out of water bottles, I already do all sorts of things that are bad for the environment. This blog is my own personal quest to begin a sustainable living lifestyle, and hopefully you can learn from me along the way!

I will be discussing all sorts of ideas that I have come across or had to reduce my reliance on mass produced goods. However, there is one thing that I can not give up completely: my car. However, right now my wife and I both commute to school and save gas and emissions that way!
